Nelson B. Powell, M.D., D.D.S. - RETIRED

Education

Dr. Nelson Powell graduated the dental school program at the University of California in 1974. After graduation, he attended the medical school at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle. He graduated in 1979. Dr. Nelson Powell then joined the Stanford University Medical Center’s Department of Surgery. In June of 1983 he completed his internship in Head and Neck Surgery Otolaryngology.

He currently holds the following credentials at the Stanford Medical Center:

  • Adjunct Clinical Professor of Sleep Disorders Medicine & Research
  • Adjunct Clinical Professor, Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery
  • Diplomat of the American Board of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery
  • Fellow of the American College of Surgeons
  • Fellow of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

Work History

Dr. Nelson Powell has continued his partnership with Stanford University Hospital for the past 29 years. He also has his own private practice.

Although Dr. Nelson Powell’s primary focus is the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders he continues to do maxillofacial surgery for skeletal facial deformities as well as facial plastic surgery.

Dr. Nelson Powell has also shared his expertise by teaching residents, fellows and post graduate physicians in the U.S., Europe and Asia.

Publications

Since 1983 Dr. Powell has published over 100 papers in peer-reviewed journals, many of which can be reviewed on this website under Research. Most of these papers focus on the surgical treatment of sleep disorders but the list also includes papers on sleepy drivers.
