Nelson B. Powell, M.D., D.D.S.

Dr. Nelson Powell is an Otolaryngologist Head & Neck Surgeon who has dedicated the majority of his professional career to the medical and surgical management of sleep disorders. His interest in Sleep-Disorders Medicine started at Stanford University Medical Center and dates back to the late 1970s.

Dr. Powell attended dental school at the University of California School of Dentistry, (UC Medical Center, San Francisco) and graduated with a dental degree in 1974. He then attended medical school at the University of Washington School of Medicine (Seattle, Washington) and graduated in 1979. Following graduation Dr. Powell joined the Stanford University Medical Center (Stanford, California) Department of Surgery, completing an internship and residency in Head and Neck Surgery Otolaryngology in June 1983.

He has been associated with Stanford University Hospital for the past 29 years and is also in private practice. Dr. Powell holds the following academic credentials at Stanford Medical Center: Adjunct Clinical Professor of Sleep Disorders Medicine & Research, and Adjunct Clinical Professor Department of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery, a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. Although Dr. Powell's primary focus is the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders he continues to do maxillofacial surgery for skeletal facial deformities as well as facial plastic surgery.

Since 1983 Dr. Powell has published over 100 papers in peer reviewed journals, many of which can be reviewed on this web-site under Research. Most of these papers focus on the surgical treatment of sleep disorders but the list also includes papers on sleepy drivers. Dr. Powell has also shared his expertise by teaching residents, fellows and post graduate physicians in the U.S., Europe and Asia.
